Palombar wins the 4th Betweien Edições Children’s Literature Prize

Palombar wins the 4th Betweien Edições Children’s Literature Prize
Palombar has won the 4th Betweien Edições Children’s Literature Prize, an annual initiative organised by the publisher in partnership with the Institute of Education at the University of Minho. The competition aims to recognise and publish original short stories for children that address a social, environmental or community cause.

This award recognises the work carried out by Palombar – Nature and Rural Heritage Conservation in the field of environmental education for the younger generation, and reinforces our belief that it is from childhood onwards that a more mindful, critical and caring understanding of and engagement with the local area, biodiversity and rural heritage is fostered.

Award to be presented in July

The official presentation of the award is scheduled for July, during Betweien Edições’ anniversary ceremony. Palombar, in collaboration with Betweien Edições, will now work on the development and publication of the winning work, the title, theme, author and launch date of which will be announced in due course.

Once the book is printed, 500 copies will be donated to Palombar, strengthening the association’s ability to broaden its educational impact.

National recognition in an ever-growing award

In recent editions, the Betweien Edições Children’s Literature Prize received over 100 entries from various locations across Portugal, including Braga, Peniche, Lisbon and Coimbra, as well as Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Aveiro, Porto and Macedo de Cavaleiros.

The stories submitted covered more than 30 different themes, reflecting the diversity of current concerns relating to childhood and education. Among the themes are raising awareness of conditions such as diabetes and Parkinson’s disease, as well as areas such as mental health, violence, environmental education and the appreciation of rural spaces and traditions.

The aim is to foster an imagination inspired by reading these stories, capable of encouraging, in young readers, a desire for personal exploration and an environmental and social awareness.

The competition stands out for combining literary creation with social responsibility, promoting a love of reading among children whilst supporting institutions working for social, environmental and community causes.

Palombar’s victory in this edition represents not only recognition of the educational and social value of the story submitted, but also the relevance of the association’s mission in raising environmental awareness.

Palombar reinforces its commitment to environmental education aimed at children and young people

For Palombar, this recognition highlights the importance of promoting stories that foster environmental awareness from childhood and value the relationship between human communities, the land, biodiversity and nature conservation.

In this context, Palombar has already published two books aimed at children and young people, namely "The Secret Diary of the Bonelli’s Eagle" and "The Wolf Who Wasn’t Bad"; this award-winning title is the third. We intend to continue investing heavily in this key area.
