The project "Hands on - Volunteering teams for Rural and Natural Heritage" of Palombar - Association for Nature and Rural Heritage Conservation, developed and approved in the scope of the Volunteering in High Priority Areas programme of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) of the European Union (EU), has as its main objective to promote the restoration and conservation of the rural and natural heritage of the Northeast Transmontano and will be implemented during 2022.

Project has two main pillars

The project, financed by the European Solidarity Corps Programme of the European Union, has two main pillars: international volunteer workcamps , with the aim of promoting the restoration of buildings of vernacular architecture associated with rural communities and nature conservation, and workshops and meetings on traditional building techniques, with the purpose of transmitting knowledge on age-old techniques that resort to the use of local and environmentally sustainable materials, presenting ecological solutions for the architecture and construction sectors.

The actions for the restoration of rural heritage, as well as the training on traditional building techniques will focus on the relationship that these components establish with the surrounding natural environment and nature conservation. Rural buildings, besides having been built to serve the needs of the population, are also a shelter for wildlife, thus contributing to the conservation and promotion of biodiversity. They are therefore rural icons of high cultural, social, natural and ecological value that we want to recover and conserve.

Additionally, this project aims to promote the dynamisation of the rural world, the discovery of the territory and its natural, heritage, cultural and human richness, as well as the intergenerational sharing of experiences and knowledge.

Project actions will take place in the small village of Uva

The project’s activities, which will take place in the small village of Uva, in the municipality of Vimioso, district of Bragança (Portugal), will be carried out in collaboration with several international partners, who will be responsible for recruiting volunteers and trainers to integrate its various actions.

This project was approved in 2020, but due to the various constraints imposed by the pandemic of COVID-19, it is implemented in 2022.
